The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce – Who Will Beat Them?
As we approach the Christmas Holiday, the Ladies of Storrs have yet to be challenged, let alone lose a game this season. And they’ve beaten 5 ranked teams rather badly, including the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams in the country at the time. So I ask the $100,000 question, who can beat them ?? We may not have an answer until April in Nashville. Now look, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We have no clue what’s ahead from a health issue with this team. Let’s hope the worse is behind them and they can stay healthy for a good, strong run.
Lindsay Gottlieb, The Cal Coach may have said it best, “they better than us, but they’re better than everyone.” Why is that ? Good players, sure..but there are a lot of teams that recruit High School All-Americans. That’s where UConn has the edge. Geno Auriemma and Chris Dailey play a big role along with Shea Ralph and Marissa Moseley in trying like heck to demand perfection that which in turn hopefully achieves excellence. Can’t complain about the results.
Personally, I think there is only one team that will challenge UConn, and that’s Muffett McGraw’s team from South Bend. Notre Dame plays as tough a style as UConn. And the ACC will have a very hard time adapting to their style. Now as I say that, Duke rebounded nicely on the road at a packed, Rupp Arena to hold Kentucky to it’s lowest point total of the season and beat the Wildcats in a Top Ten matchup. But unless they do something against the Irish, I can’t take them seriously as a Final Four contender.
And the CT Sun may be more convinced than ever to draft Chiney Ogwumike of Stanford after her 30/20 game against Tennessee Saturday. She works oh so hard, just like her sister Neka…And is equally a great young lady.
Enjoy the week off from Hoops, but get ready to get busy as Conference play starts Sunday with Cincinnati in Storrs before Orlando for New Years and at Memphis. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours from all of us who bring the games to you.. :)
