WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say the shooting death of an 87-year-old Connecticut man known for his Christmas light display at his New Hampshire home was a homicide.
John Chakalos was found dead at his Windsor home on Friday from a single gunshot wound to the head. Police are investigating.
The Journal Inquirer reports that Theresa Goodwin, a great-niece of Chakalos, said the family had been mourning the death of Chakalos’ wife, Rita Chakalos, of cancer before Thanksgiving.
The couple owned an 80-acre estate in Chesterfield, N.H., known for its annual holiday light display. Guests have been invited to bring a monetary donation or food.
Sunday was the last night for people to tour this year’s show.
Joy E. Washburn, a caretaker of Chakalos’ Chesterfield property, told The Keene Sentinel she hopes the tradition will continue.
