Woman Who Strangled Boyfriend In Hartford Sobs In Court

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A Hartford woman accused of strangling her boyfriend cried uncontrollably during her first court appearance since being charged with murder.

Twenty-four-year-old Katherine Santiago was arraigned Monday in Hartford Superior Court. Her case was continued to Jan. 10 and she remains detained on $2 million bail. No plea was entered.

Police say it appears Santiago strangled Marcos DeJesus with an electrical cord at their South End home Saturday, a day before DeJesus’ 28th birthday.

Santiago’s public defender, John Stawicki, declined to comment on the allegations. He called the incident “another tragedy involving domestic violence.”

Police say Santiago told officers that she wrapped an electrical cord around DeJesus’ neck after he pushed her onto a bed and tried to put a pillow on her face.
