The recently re-opened Powder Ridge ski area in Middlefield is putting into place a ground-breaking requirement that mandates all riders to wear helmets on the slopes.
The mandate is possibly the first of its kind nationwide.
Dr. Tom Trojian is a Sports Medicine Specialist at the UConn Health Center and says, “In North America each year, there’s an estimated 600,o00 head injuries associated with skiing and snowboarding.”
He says about 20 percent of all skiing and snowboarding injuries are head injuries and that he’s seen similar rules when it comes to snowboard parks, but never a blanket requirement like this one.
He applauded Powder Ridge for taking this step to ensure safety.
