The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce – Duke Postscript
Tuesday Night’s atmosphere at Cameron Indoor Stadium was as good as you can expect, minus more students due to the Holiday Break. But once again, #1 proved it’s love for the big game and UConn took care of it’s business again in it’s 22pt win over #2 Duke. The difference in this game was the 16-1 run over nearly 8 minutes that turned a 12-11 UConn lead into a 28-12 lead that grew to as many as 23. That’s when Breanna Stewart again stepped up in every which way to dominate the Blue Devils. Moriah Jefferson’s own 9 point UConn run was equally as effective as the Huskies built that lead. She’s a star in the making. 16 assists and 3 turnovers in her last two games. Only one miscue last night.
Duke however showed me something last night, some fight. They got within 15 at the half and whittled it down to 13 after trailing again by 20 with 8 minutes left. Chelsea Gray spearheaded that rally and made some tough runners. But they forgot to do something, guard Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. She hit a career high 7 three pointers as UConn made a season high 12. She ignited an 11-0 run that put the nails in the coffin. Some return for the Junior from Anaheim Hills, CA. She hung out on the wing and just let it fly. But did however have two key offensive rebounds that lead to UConn hoops. And while Stewey and KML get the ink, Stefanie Dolson was just plain solid on both ends. 14p, 9r and 6 assists…Okay, add two blocks.. Yes America, WBB’s best front line in college game plays in Storrs, CT.
As for Duke, 61 points the most scored by a Coach P team v UConn at Duke. They became the first team to shoot 40+ % this season keyed by 53% in the 2nd half. But the 1st half , 16-1 run spelled doom for Duke. Asking any team to rally from 23 down to beat UConn is asking a lot. Don’t be shocked if the Huskies see them again in late March/Early April. And congrats to their Radio Voice, Steve Barnes on his impending marriage in February after losing his first wife sadly to cancer a few years ago. He and his broadcast partner, Morgan Patrick are two good guys in our business.
Now, off to the Garden Sunday and a date with the Cal Bears. It’s the start of a UConn-PAC 12 Twinbill as the Men visit Washington in Seattle at 3:30 after we’re done in Gotham. Hope you can join us
