Hartford Police Arrest 2 In Grisly Homicide

Hartford police have made arrests in connection with a homicide from earlier this year.

They say Madelyne Martinez-Mercado, 23, of New Britain and Talib Shaheer, 32, of Waterbury, were picked up Tuesday. Each is being held on a million dollars bond.

It was back on Sept. 5 that police say Christopher “T.J.” Jefferson was seen getting into a vehicle while Martinez-Mercado held him at gunpoint. About an hour later, Jefferson was found on the side of a road near the Connecticut River in Portland.

Both suspects are facing felony murder charges, along with robbery, kidnapping, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm charges.

Police say the murder stemmed from an attempt to rob Jefferson of marijuana. A struggle ensued as the suspect vehicle made its way down Bond Street in Hartford. That’s when police say the shot was fired, hitting Jefferson in the head. The suspects then allegedly dumped his body in Portland.
