Police Say Mother Faked Kidnap Report, Left Baby In Cold Car

New Britain police say a mother is charged with attempted manslaughter and other charges after she put her eight-month-old daughter  in a parked car with broken windows and called police to claim the baby had been kidnapped.

Leah Nichols told police an intruder had broken into her apartment on Lawlor Street and hit her in the head, and the infant was missing when she came to.

Police say they found the baby inside the car wearing only a onesie and wrapped in a thin blanket,  though the wind chill had pushed temperatures into the teens and single digits.  Police say they were able to determine that there had been no intruder, no assault and no abduction.  They say Nichols herself had put the baby in the car.

Besides attempted manslaughter,  she is charged with risk of injury to a cyhild and false reporting of an incident.  Her bond was set at $200,000.
