Tax Collectors Association Treasurer Charged With Embezzling From Group

The former treasurer of the Connecticut Tax Collectors Association was arrested today, and charged with embezzling from the group.

Bristol Police Lieutenant Donn Watson said 55-year-old Debra Guerrrette is charged with larceny.

“She misappropriated funds into her own account,” Watson said. “Approximately $50,000 was taken from that organization.”

Police said they analyzed the association’s financial records, and Guerrette’s financial documents, and determined the money was taken between 2008 and 2013.

A lawyer for the association said the organization’s president discovered the problem. Adam Cohen said Guerrette had been using a bank card, to take money out of an ATM, then took steps to hide the theft.

“The members take this so personally, because this is someone they are friends with, someone who was a colleague for decades,” Cohen said. “They obviously trusted her, and when this came to light the members were very upset.”

Guerrette was formerly the tax collector in Plainville, but officials in that town have said they found no money missing.

She lives in Bristol.
