L&M: Nurses Can’t Return Without Contract

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ Lawrence and Memorial Hospital nurses plan to end their strike Saturday night but a hospital spokesman says they will not be allowed back without a contract agreement.

Hospital spokesman Michael O’Farrell said Saturday morning the New London hospital will not grant the union’s request to allow nurses to return to work when they end their strike at 11 p.m. while contract issues remain unresolved.

He said the hospital wants uninterrupted care for its estimated 150 patients without the threat of another strike. He said patient care has not suffered.

Matt O’Connor of AFT Connecticut said in an email that talks Friday ended with the union wanting to meet again Saturday but with hospital representatives saying they needed more time to review a proposal and would return to the table Tuesday.
