Mayors Against Illegal Guns Makes Thanksgiving Placemats To Promote Gun Control

NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) — Mayors Against Illegal Guns has made a printable placemat for Americans to use during Thanksgiving dinner in an effort to promote gun control.

The “Talking Turkey About Guns” placemat quizzes those at the dinner table about Ronald Reagan supporting background checks; claims more NRA members support comprehensive background check than Americans who watch football (86 to 59 percent); and asks if people live in a state that requires background checks for all gun sales.

The placemat also states, according to the American Pie Council, that 90 percent of Americans support background checks for all gun sales, which is the same percentage of Americans who enjoy eating pie.

The Obama administration pushed for tougher gun control laws following the shooting massacres last year at an Aurora, Colo. movie theater and at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

A bipartisan Senate bill aimed at expanding background checks failed earlier this year.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns was co-founded in 2006 by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
