NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London says it’s preparing for a possible strike next week by union nurses and technicians.

The union has authorized a strike that could begin Wednesday if no agreement is reached. The two sides failed to reach a deal Thursday, but plan to meet again Tuesday.

Hospital president and CEO Bruce Cummings said Friday it will use replacement workers to avoid service disruptions but that some elective services could be affected. Cummings said the hospital would lockout workers if a strike extended beyond Nov. 30.

The union says it’s still hopeful a compromise can be reached on the job security issues that have been a sticking point.

The hospital’s contract with AFT Connecticut expired Nov. 16.

A strike would be the first at a Connecticut hospital in 33 years.
