PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A national anti-abortion group is pressing Rhode Island’s health insurance marketplace to offer plans that don’t cover abortion services, and says failing to do so violates the rights of those who object to the procedure.
A letter from Democrats For Life of America to Gov. Lincoln Chafee says all of HealthSource RI’s 2014 plans offer coverage for elective abortion.
Executive Director Kristen Day says her group supports the federal health care overhaul but that alternative plans should be available for those who object to abortion. She also says plans should be more transparent about offering such coverage.
Under the Affordable Care Act, one plan without abortion coverage is required by 2017 under the federal “multi-state” plan program.
Spokeswomen for Chafee and the exchange did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
