Whooping Cough Confirmed At Two East Lyme Schools

School officials in East Lyme have confirmed cases of “whooping cough” in two of their schools.

In a letter sent home from Superindentdent of Schools James Lombardo on Thursday, parents were alerted of the disease, also known as pertussis, at Flanders Elementary School and East Lyme High School.

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, “whooping cough” is highly contagious, and is spread through the air, causing rapid coughs that make it hard to breathe.

Parents are urged to contact their health care provider if symptoms arise, and officials say it’s a good idea to ensure their children’s pertussis vaccinations are up-to-date.
