West Haven Council Chief Accused Of Embezzlement

NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) _ Police say West Haven’s City Council chairman who is seeking re-election has turned himself in on charges he embezzled $172,000 while working for Chase Bank.

Stephen DeCresenzo turned himself in Friday morning after learning of a warrant for his arrest.

Police say Chase Bank contacted New Canaan Police in August to report possible fraud between three accounts. Authorities say an investigation alleges that DeCresenzo embezzled $172,000 from two accounts and used a third account to transfer the money.

The 36-year-old DeCresenzo was arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Friday.

The Democratic office-holder says he will remain on the ballot on Election Day on Tuesday. And his lawyer said he advised his client to not resign from his City Council post because he’s not been convicted of a crime.
