Bureau Of Prisons To Build New Women’s Prison At Danbury; Will Continue With Plan To Move Men To Existing Prison
Senators from Connecticut, New York and Vermont say the Federal Bureau of Prisons has changed its plan for the Danbury Federal Prison and now will build a new prison for women near the existing prison. The current prison will be turned back to a men’s facility.
Danbury, which since 1994 has been the only federal prison in the Northeast housing women had been scheduled to be turned back into a men’s prison. The senators raised concerns about that plan, which would have sent many of the inmates out of the area to Alabama.
The Bureau of Prisons now plans to build a new prison for women near the current site, and will maintain the satellite prison there for women.
