Authorities say two children under the ages of 10 have died in an early Sunday morning crash in Meriden. The accident happened at the intersection of Broad Street and Gale Avenue just before 2am.
The children who died include a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy.
A third child in the vehicle, age 12, is now in a hospital Intensive Care Unit, according to police.
The two adults in the car, believed to be the parents of the two children who died, are also being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
Investigators say a Subaru Legacy carrying the three children and two adults was idle at a traffic light when an GMC Denali SUV slammed into the rear of their vehicle killing the two children. Both of the vehicles were heading in the northbound direction on Route 5.
According to police, the driver of the SUV , 29 year old Israel Gonzalez of Meriden fled the scene and entered a nearby home. The suspect was later apprehended by police.Gonzalez is being held in lieu of a million dollars bond, charged with Felony Evading Responsibility,Reckless Driving and Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a License.More serious charges are pending .
Reports say speed and possibly alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
The names of the victims have not been released.
