The Democratic Speaker of the State House and the governor have joined Republican leaders in calling for hearings into the way charges of campus sexual assaults are handled by the University of Connecticut. Speaker Brendan Sharkey says he’s happy to work with his Republican colleagues, Rep. Larry Cafero and Sen. John McKinney, who called for such hearings earlier today.
Monday nationally-known women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred announced she was filing a Title IX sex discrimination complaint against the university on behalf of seven current or former students who charged their complaints of rape or sexual abuse had not been handled properly by the university.
Governor Dannel Malloy also released a statement supporting the idea of holding public hearings. He says keeping young people safe is one of the most basic responsibilities of institutions of higher education. And he said he expects UConn to act quickly in cooperating with the federal Department of Education’s investigation of the complaint.
