Police: Street Solicitor Used Donations For Drugs

A man whom Branford police say is a fixture at a town intersection solicting roadside donations is facing drug charges.

They say 63-year-old Lawrence Hayden used the donations he collected to buy drugs.

Police say Hayden has been seen on a number of occassions at Cedar and North Main Streets flagging down motorists while carrying signs indicating he and his dog were homeless and hungry.

Police finally arrested Hayden Tuesday.

They say they discovered ten bags of heroin in Hayden’s North Main Street apartment.

Police say Hayden admitted to buying the drugs with funds that were given to him earlier Tuesday.

He faces a narcotics possession charge and is due in court October 29.

Branford Police Chief Kevin Halloran is warning the public to be wary of roadside solicitors, some of whom may be motivated by drugs and playing on the hearts of law abiding and generous residents.
