Groton-Based Sub Welcoming Female Officers

GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ The Navy says two attack submarines based in Groton, Conn. will be the first to welcome female officers to their crews.

Six women are expected to report to USS Virginia and USS Minnesota no later than January 2015.

More than 40 female officers already have joined the crews of the Navy’s ballistic-missile and guided-missile submarines, where berthing is less of a privacy problem because they are significantly larger.

The Navy ended its ban on women joining submarine crews in 2010.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said Tuesday the assignment of women to Virginia-class submarines is the next natural step to more fully integrate women into the submarine force.
