Avon Cop Fired

Avon police officer Todd Akerly taught DARE classes to sixth-graders. He was fired Oct. 3 for inappropriate social media contact with those students.

The police chief did make clear that while Akerly violated department policy, those violations did not involve sexual contact or any sexual references and nothing of criminal nature was found from an investigation.

The Department of Children and Families is investigating the complaint.

Akerly had been an officer in Avon for 10 years and also ran into problems in 2007 when he was suspended for a day for a complaint that he was asleep while on duty.

Before Avon, he served four years in the Hartford police department.
