NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ The sister of the Connecticut doctor whose wife and two daughters were killed in a 2007 home invasion says he has been approached about running for public office and is thinking about entering politics.

Johanna Chapman tells The Associated Press Dr. William Petit, the only survivor of the hostage ordeal in Cheshire, has had talks recently with Republican party officials.

Petit did not return a telephone message left at his house.

Chapman says her brother is passionate about the issues, but she’s not sure the timing is right. Petit and his new wife are expecting a baby in December.

A Republican official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential conversations says Petit has talked with Republicans about running for Congress.

Petit campaigned against the repeal of Connecticut’s death penalty.
