Four construction workers were rushed to hospitals after an accident at a house under construction on South Gate Lane in Fairfield. Authorities say four subcontractors were carrying a cast-iron tub on the second floor shortly after 9:00 a.m. when the safety stairs collapsed, sending them plummeting to the basement.
Fairfield fighters rigged a tripod-and-rope system to assist in the removal of the workers from the basement with a “stokes basket.” All four suffered what were described as serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
Fairfield authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Adminstration are investigating. The site was temporarily closed.
