I often say we live in two Connecticuts, one Connecticut is the 4 major cities and then the other is the remaining suburbs, the schools are different, poverty rates , crime and even taxes. The Federal Dept. of Education just awarded over $900,000 to the Westport school system to buy kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and roller blades. My first reaction was so much for the government shutdown, these are essential purchases? My second thought was, Wow this really shows the two Connectucuts, Hartford public schools struggle everyday, getting school supplies is a big deal, and beautiful, scenic Westport has taxpayers footing the bill to buy expensive recreational equipment that city kids may never see in there lifetime. Essential purchases? Role of government? Money better spent somewhere else? I understand Westport is excited to get the grant, but many of us may be wondering about government priorities and the growing divide between urban and suburban.
