We keep hearing that the next generation is not prepared for the new worldwide workforce. Are they tough enough? Do they have the educational capabilities? Are they prepared for international competition? Their work ethic is questioned, among many things. It’s no wonder, with political correctness ruling the day, government intervention in everything from healthcare to what size soda you are allowed to drink, it has gotten out of control. Today we read that in one middle school on Long Island the school administration is afraid kids will get hurt at recess…. Yes, that happens when kids run around and have fun maybe even play a competitive game they can get hurt. The school has banned “footballs, baseballs, lacrosse balls or anything that may hurt someone on school grounds”. [ watch out for those flying lunch boxes they can be quite deadly ! ] http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/10/07/long-island-middle-school-bans-footballs-other-recreational-items/ . Obviously the school administrators are afraid of lawsuits, but this is lawsuit paranoia, unless there is some negligence by the school they are not liable simply letting kids play safely with God forbid a football. There are countless stories like this across the country and I am all for protecting our kids, but let them play , let them scrape their knees, maybe even twist an ankle, it’s all part of growing up. Our generation has a name, we are called the “helicopter parents” because we hover over them, I say let’s go crazy and let them play tag at recess, it may be a little risky but you can bet the kids in China and India are studying twice as much as our kids and maybe running in the schoolyard…they are not afraid.
