New Britain Police officers today shot a gun-wielding man.

Officers were called to a report of shots fired on Glen Street about 8:40 am. No one was injured by that gunfire.

Chief James Wardwell says officers were able to identify a suspect.

“As investigating officers were present on that initial scene, that suspect returned in his vehicle to that location,” Wardwell said.  “After officers attempted to stop him, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed in the vehicle he was operating.”

Police say the armed man crashed his vehicle on Corbin Avenue, then tried to run away.

Officers found the man in the back yard of a house nearby on Lincoln Street.

They say he refused to drop his gun, and police opened fire.

He underwent surgery, and is in stable condition.

The man was shot by police about an hour after the initial call about shots on Glen Street
