The discussion [ not debate] on mental illness must continue in earnest. Yesterday’s incident in Washington highlights once again the significant problem in our country. If we put half the effort into resolving mental illness as we do in the gun debate we would be making some progress. Mental illness still has social stigma’s but at some point we are all going to realize how prevalent it is and how many millions of families across this country are impacted. People don’t choose mental illness and the spectrum of illness goes from slight depression to suicidal thoughts. If there is anything good that may come out of Obamacare I hope it is the movement towards ”parity” in our community. We must treat mental illness like we treat cancer or any other disease. Next week we will discuss “parity” and have an honest and open dialogue on an issue that has been hidden in the back closet for too long !
