Ex-Pequot Treasurer Has Change Of Plea Hearing

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) _ The former treasurer for the Mashantucket Pequots is due in federal court in New Haven for a change-of-plea hearing.

Steven Thomas has pleaded not guilty to charges that he stole $700,000 from the tribe, which owns and operates the Foxwoods Resort Casino in southeastern Connecticut. Court documents show the change-of-plea hearing is set for Thursday.

The tribal council said Wednesday that Thomas had resigned from his seat on the council.

Thomas is accused of stealing the money between 2005 and 2008, when he was assistant director of the tribe’s natural resources department.

He was indicted in January along with his brother, former tribal chairman Michael Thomas, who was convicted in July of embezzling $100,000 from the tribe.
