So Now What?
What’s wrong with this picture? The government is technically “shutdown ” and Obamacare begins today and people can begin enrolling. As I said on my show yesterday there is some irony that the Republicans could shut down the government and Obamacare would begin in full swing today , kind of defeats the purpose. So, now what ? Well the politicians will still get paid and the military will face furloughs, White House tours will stop again [ remember the sequestration] this all may go on for a few days, the national press will attempt to suggest the world will come to an end, which it won’t . Frankly not much will happen, at some point in the next week or so they will come to an agreement , the furloughed federal employees will have had a few days off and get paid. Now the bigger question looms, by Oct. 17th the debt ceiling has to be increased, what game of chicken will be played over that legislation, will the Republicans keep the government closed till then ? If they are going to play this out then they have to wait till then, not raising the debt ceiling will have real economic impact, I don’t think they have the political fortitude to do that. The other irony is that the folks that get the most “punished” in a shutdown are the military which the Republicans say they support. The social security checks will still go out and social services will stay intact. Best question, what federal employees are going to consider themselves non-essential? And expect fund raising letters to be flying form both sides of the isle , “never let a good crisis go to waste” as one prominent Democrat once said.
