PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s new health insurance marketplace opened as scheduled for enrollment, but the website was quickly overwhelmed by visitors and went down.

Tuesday marks the first day that people can enroll for coverage through HealthSource RI, which is part of the federal health care overhaul. But the site couldn’t accommodate the traffic and wasn’t working.

Exchange spokesman Ian Lang said there are glitches associated with the launch of any major technology initiative and officials are working to address the problem by increasing the site’s capacity.

Exchange officials said people who want to enroll or get information may call the customer service center.

Under the Affordable Care Act, most Americans will be required to have health insurance as of Jan. 1.
