WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) _ Brandon Bass is 6-foot-8, 260 pounds, and an elite NBA athlete in top physical shape.

But he can’t swim.

The Boston Celtics forward is hoping to change that starting Friday when he’ll join about 10 children from the Boston Boys & Girls Club at the Waltham Sports Club pool for his first swimming lesson. He tells The Boston Globe  he will continue taking lessons with them for as long as his NBA schedule permits, then will take private lessons until he can swim proficiently.

Bass grew up in Baton Rouge, La., with nowhere to swim and says it’s important that children learn an important skill.

He owns a Jet-Ski and home with a pool now, and his children, 6-year-old Brandon Jr., and 20-month-old Bella, are already taking lessons.
