NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ Security is tightening at Navy and Coast Guard bases in Connecticut following the fatal shootings at the Washington Navy Yard.
The Day of New London reports the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound now requires that base visitors receive a security officer’s approval in advance and the gate receive a written notice before visitors arrive.
The written notice has been used in the past, but personnel could vouch for visitors at the gate.
Lt. Jeff Janaro, spokesman for Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, said the sector had been tightening security as part of an annual review.
But procedures were evaluated after a gunman fatally shot 12 people in Washington on Sept. 16.
Changes to the Navy’s security procedures will affect the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, but a spokesman did not provide details.
