A former Meriden policeman has been sentenced to 14 months in prison in federal court in New Haven.

Evan Cossette,  son of the town’s police chief,  had been found guilty of use of force against a prisoner in the lockup, and of making false reports about the incident in his report. .

The prosecution had asked for a sentence of more than two years.

A video played in court showed Cossette pushing an intoxicated, handcuffed prisoner in a cell.  The prisoner fell backwards and hit his head, causing a large gash

Cossette apologized in court,  and said he’d always dreamed of becoming a police officer and now realizes that dream is shattered.
