Security Officers To Decide On Electric Boat Unions

GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ Security officers at submarine maker Electric Boat are deciding whether to unionize.

They are set to vote Wednesday on whether to be represented by the Security, Police, Fire Professionals of America. About 80 security officers in Groton and New London are eligible to vote.

About 35 percent of EB’s 12,000 employees are unionized and most are members of the Marine Draftsmen’s Association-United Auto Workers Local 571 and Metal Trades Council.

The Day of New London reports ( ) that Electric Boat says a union would not establish higher pay or improved benefits.

The union says its organizing drive is about fair treatment and having a voice.

Electric Boat, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp., says even if the union wins the election, the company has the right to hire an outside contract guard force.
