HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Lawyers for a brain-damaged man whose conviction in a 1987 Connecticut killing was overturned last year are preparing to make arguments before the state Supreme Court.

Justices are scheduled to take up the case of 67-year-old Richard Lapointe on Tuesday. Prosecutors are appealing last year’s ruling by the state Appellate Court, which granted Lapointe a new trial.

Lapointe has been in prison for more than two decades for the killing of his ex-wife’s 88-year-old grandmother, Bernice Martin, who was found raped, stabbed and strangled in her burning Manchester apartment. Lapointe was convicted of murder and other crimes in 1992.

Advocates for people with mental disabilities have argued for years that Lapointe could not have committed the crimes and his mental capacity made him vulnerable to making false confessions.
