Toddler Died Of Blunt Trauma, Had Been Hit In Abdomen

Hartford police and prosecutors are moving to upgrade charges against a Hartford man after the Chief State Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death of his girlfriend’s 13-month-old daughter a homicide caused by blunt impact.  19-year-old David Brown Barrett was origially charged with assault and risk of injury to a child.

Tyasia Allen was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital after she was taken there Thursday afternoon.  Doctors told detectives that injuries to the toddler’s abdomen were consistent with trauma,  possibly from a fist.

Police say Brown-Barrett first told them the little girl was hurt when she fell from the bed,  but later gave a sworn statement in which he described losing patience with her and intentionally striking her in the abdomen.

His bond was set at a million dollars.  Police are continuing to investigate.
