A special education teacher in New Haven is charged with three separate complaints of sexual assault of students. The charges against 48-year-old Robert Schmitt of Hamden involve complaints by two girls and a boy at the MicroSociety Magnet School in New Haven. All three children were younger than 13 at the time of the alleged assaults, during the 2011-2012 school year.
Police say the teacher has not been back inside the school since the first incident was reported April 29 to police and the Department of Children and Families.
The school sent a letter home with parents this week, and school staff and social workers are being made available to talk to any parents or students who have
questions or concerns.
In all three cases, Schmitt is charged with sexual in the fourth degree and risk of injury to a child. In addition, in the case of the boy, he is charged with third degree assault.
Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries says the school system is moving forward with termination proceedings against Schmitt.
