Torrington Football Player Faces Sentencing In Sex Assault

LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ An 18-year-old high school football player faces between three and seven years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl who later faced online taunts.

Edgar Gonzalez is expected to be sentenced Friday in Superior Court on a charge of second-degree sexual assault.

Gonzalez, Torrington High School’s most valuable player last year, was one of four football players charged in a case that involved two victims.

Authorities say the accusers and suspects knew one another. State law prohibits sexual encounters between a 13-year-old and anyone more than three years older.

Officials have said the victims faced abuse on Twitter from students for “snitching” and “ruining” the players’ lives.

The case led to new social media rules in Torrington for student athletes.
