9 Months In Prison For Torrington Football Player In Statutory Rape Case

LITCHFIELD, Conn. (AP) _ A Torrington High School football player charged in a statutory rape case has changed his plea to guilty and will likely be sentenced to nine months in prison.

Joan Toribio pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault in Superior Court on Friday. As part of his plea agreement, Toribio will not have to register as a sex offender. He’s expected to be sentenced on Nov. 15.

Another player, Edgar Gonzalez, was expected to be sentenced Friday on a charge of second-degree sexual assault. He pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl and faces between three and seven years in prison.

He was one of four football players charged in a case that involved two victims.
The case drew attention because the girls were bullied on Twitter by the players’ supporters.
