Tuesday-August 6 : We’re baaaack. And glad to be so. The return of my notebook, reflections on all things UConn and whatever runs across my fertile little 60 year old mind!

Today was my first chance to watch the 2013 Huskies at work. It was also their first day in full pads and it was obvious the boys were happy to be poppin’. As usual, both units had good plays and bad.

The best throw of the day may have come off the right hand of talented freshman Tim Boyle during red-zone drills. The Xavier alum threw a perfect ball to his right to Geremy Davis, putting it over the cornerback into Davis waiting hands. Boyle threw a couple picks and had a fumbled handoff but that throw was proof positive of his skill.

On defense, it was great to see Jesse Joseph back on the field. The big Canadien missed the last nine games of 2012 and all of spring ball after tearing his Achilles in the win over Maryland. Jesse told me it’s great to be back but he is still shaking off the rust. Despite losing Trevardo Williams and Ryan Wirth, the defensive line could be one of the Huskies strengths.

Yawin Smallwood picked off a pass and would have taken it all the way if the whistle didn’t blow. Smallwood is primed for a big year, being named to almost every defensive watch list. Ryan Donoughe and Florida transfer Graham Stewart played LB with the starters and it will be interesting who joins Smallwood as the starters.

One thing to watch during camp will be how many freshman earn spots on the two deep. WR Brian Lemelle and TE Tommy Myers of Coventry are two newcomers to keep an eye on.

The scoreboard snafu at the Rent is mind boggling to me. How this was allowed to happen by the Capitol Region Development Authority (CRDA) is stunning. I don’t care how impressive the new board will be or how good the temporary board will be for the Towson game. When your LONE tenant is paying $170,000 per game for rent, they should be treated better. Inexcusable. The excuses made in Desmond Connor’s story in the Courant by CRDA venue director Kim Hart are lame.

Notebook #1 is in the books. I am looking forward to another great season with Wayne, Kevin, Bob, on site producer Anthony McCalla and our new IMG studio host Keith Brake. Email me any questions at joe.d’ambrosio@cbsradio.com
