Trouble for Hartford Safety Officials

Racist comments have landed a Hartford city dispatcher on administrative leave.

Mayor Pedro Segarra was made aware of a radio transmission that occurred Monday in which the dispatcher used a racist epithet and after hearing the recording went ahead and made the decision to place the dispatcher – whose name is not known – on leave pending further investigation.

Those working with the dispatcher say they feel the transmission was a mispronunciation of the word “neighbor”.

Meanwhile, Hartford police sergeant Steve Kessler has been suspended 10 days and had a position change after making an inappropriate racist comment while on duty.

The penalty is the result of an internal investigation launched in May.
