GROTON, Conn. (AP) _ A Navy attack submarine has returned to its homeport in Groton following a six-month deployment.
The USS Springfield returned to the Naval Submarine Base on Monday afternoon.
The Los Angeles-class submarine has traveled more than 34,000 miles and conducted operations in Europe and the Middle East since leaving Connecticut in late January. The sub’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Chris Williams, said the crew performed its duty admirably.
Families of the crew members watched as the black submarine traveled up the Thames River to the Navy base.
Springfield is the fourth Navy vessel to be named for cities in Illinois and Massachusetts. It was commissioned in 1993.
