Officials from Riverfront Recapture announced Tuesday that the 2013 Riverfest fireworks display has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 18 at 9:30pm.
Hartford’s Riverfest celebration, originally scheduled for July 6 with a rain date of July 7, was cancelled this past weekend following safety concerns for spectators along the Connecticut River.
Rivefront Recapture Director of Programs and Events Charlie Myers says river levels were the cause of organizers’ concern.
“We had an unprecedented July flood,” Myers said.
“The river levels came up to a height that made it really unsafe to do the event–both from a public standpoint along the banks of the river and from a logistic standpoint of trying to secure fireworks barges in a flooded river.”
Myers says the fireworks display is the only event that will be rescheduled. Due to the schedules of performers originally booked for the festival, Meyers says it was impossible to set a new date for normal festival activities.
The fireworks will be visible from Mortensen Riverfront Plaza and Great River Park in Hartford.
