Capitol Marks 4th

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Independence Day is being marked at the state Capitol in Hartford.

On Thursday morning, the American Legion is scheduled to hold a patriotic Massing of Colors ceremony in the Hall of Flags, located inside the state Capitol, to mark the Fourth of July holiday.

In the afternoon, the group “Friends of the Norwich Bells” plan to ring Connecticut’s replica Liberty Bell inside the Capitol building. Seventy-eight-year-old Truxton Brodhead of Niantic, a veteran and descendant of George Read, one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, is scheduled to lead the ceremony.

Traditionally, the bell is rung 13 times in recognition of the original colonies.

“Friends of the Norwich Bells” is a nonprofit community group that is dedicated the preservation, enjoyment and promotion of bells and bell-ringing in Norwich.
