Water Restrictions in East Lyme

East Lyme officials working in conjunction with the  Department of Correction have agreed to impose  mandatory water conservation measures  beginning at 9  am  Thursday. It is being done to  assist the mitigation efforts following a recent diesel fuel  leak on the grounds of the York Correctional Institution in Niantic.

The spill was caused by a broken underground pipe  connecting the above ground  diesel fuel  tank  to the   facility’s  main generators. The discovery was made three weeks ago and quickly corrected. No contaminated soil has been found  outside the grounds of the correctional facility. The  amount of fuel spilled  has yet to be determined.

The reduced demand on the town’s water supply  will assist Kropp Environmental Contractors, the  state- licensed clean-up firm  in  its data collection efforts,
