Videotaped Statement Introduced In Bridgeport Cannibal Case
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ Prosecutors at the murder trial of a Florida man have presented a videotaped statement to police in which he describes eating parts of the victim.
Thirty-five-year-old Tyree Lincoln Smith of Lynn Haven, Fla. is accused of hacking a homeless man, Angel Gonzalez, to death in Bridgeport in December, 2011.
The Connecticut Post reports that during the first day of his trial before a three-judge panel on Monday, prosecutors showed the videotaped interview Smith gave police in which he says he used a hatchet to kill Gonzalez, then took out the man’s eyes and part of his brain and ate them.
He told police he cannibalized his victim because “They needed eyes to see in the spirit realm.”
Smith’s public defender has said he plans to use an insanity defense.
