BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ A 35-year-old Florida man is expected to use an insanity defense as his murder trial begins in the slaying and cannibalizing of a homeless man in Connecticut.

Tyree Lincoln Smith Lynn Haven, Fla. is accused of using an ax to kill Angel Gonzalez, whose body was found on the third floor of an abandoned Bridgeport home in December of 2011.

According to court documents, Smith told a cousin that he collected one of his victim’s eyes and some of his brain matter, which he consumed in a nearby cemetery, washing it down with some sake.

Public defender Joseph Bruckman tells the Connecticut Post he intends to call two Yale University psychiatrists to support the insanity claim.
