Cadets Report

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ The newest class of cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London is reporting Monday for the start of the training program known as Swab Summer.

The students from the class of 2017 will receive haircuts and uniforms on reporting-in day and go through drill practice before marching onto a field to swear an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution.

About 235 students are expected to report but the academy says the exact makeup of the class will not be finalized until the end of Monday, when they begin a seven-week training program. Thirty-six percent are women.

Cadets in the four-year program graduate as junior officers with a bachelor of science degree and an obligation to serve five years in the U.S. Coast Guard.
