New London Innkeeper Convicted of Fraud Seeks to Remain Free on Appeal
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) _ The former owner of New London’s historic Lighthouse Inn is seeking to remain free while appealing her conviction on federal fraud charges.
The Day of New London reports that Maureen Clark, who was scheduled to surrender to federal authorities Monday to begin serving an 87-month sentence for investment fraud, has instead been granted a hearing in U.S. District Court to argue for an appeal bond.
She was convicted last July of defrauding $1.7 million from investors in a resort casino project in Mississippi.
Federal prosecutors say Clark and a former business partner defrauded investors from 2006 to 2010 by falsely claiming they owned land around the resort project in Lakeshore, Miss.
In the motion, Clark’s attorney argues the judge’s instructions to the jury were erroneous and prejudicial.
