Names Released in Police Involved Shooting

State Police have released the names of the   man shot  at the scene of  a house fire in Salem Tuesday evening and  the State Trooper who discharged his weapon.59 year old Robert Bergeson of  Salem  was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

A short  time after responding to the blaze at 28 Witter Road,firefighters  spotted Bergeson  who was  reportedly waving a gun and yelling.Troopers were notified and  say when they approached Bergeson he began to charge at them waving a large blunt object resembling a club in a threatening manner.Police say Bergeson ignored repeated  requests to stop and  drop the weapon.It was then  Trooper Patrick Hawes a 7  year veteran of the  State Police  discharged his weapon to  stop the imminent threat.

Trooper Hawes has been placed on administrative duty while  the incident is being reviewed. The State Police  Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit  is working  with the Eastern District major Crime Squad to determine  the circumstances surrounding the fire.
