Suspect Shot By Trooper Dies

A man shot by a state trooper during an incident in Salem last night has now died.

Police and fire personnel were on the scene Tuesday evening of a home and garage fire at 28 Witter Road around 6:40 p.m.

As firefighters were battling the blazes, they noticed a suspect in the woods in the rear of 10 Witter Road.  He was reportedly yelling and waving what initially appeared to be a gun.

Troopers on scene ordered the man, acting irrationally, to drop what looked to a blunt object or club.

They say the suspect approached the troopers in a threatening manner and he was shot.

The suspect was rushed to Backus Hospital in Norwich, then transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence where he was later pronounced dead.

Names of the suspect and the trooper who fired the fatal shot have not been released.  The investigation is continuing.
